New Retention Work Group Forming

The 2.00 minimum GPA is the gold standard for graduation and maintenance of good academic standing. However, that minimum does not kick in as the cut-off for academic probation at Hudson Valley until after the student has attempted at least 37 credits.

Logic, mathematics and research indicate that students who finish their first semester with a GPA below 2.00 will have a tough time improving their study strategies and GPA.

Retention Services is forming a work group to look at students whose first term GPA is between 2.00 and 1.30 (the cut-off for probation if the student has attempted fewer than 19 credits).

The work group will review the students’ retention and grade outcomes in subsequent terms, as well as existing and potential support services and interventions that target this at-risk population. The group will meet two or three times this semester; sub-groups will meet as needed to look at specific issues.

If you have a special interest in academically at-risk students and would like to join this retention work group, please contact Kevin McNeelege, retention specialist, at h.mcneelege@hvcc.edu.
